The profession in our country can be called one of the new, but actively developing and gaining popularity. If you decide to choose retail as your field of activity, the profession of a merchandiser can be a great option. And in order to find one for yourself, first of all, you should correctly compose a resume.
Tasks and responsibilities of a merchandiser
Before proceeding directly to the rules for compiling a merchandiser's resume, let's figure out what tasks and responsibilities fall within the scope of such employees.
The profession of a merchandiser should not be confused with a sales representative.
It acts as an intermediary between the supplier and the store, travels around outlets and concludes contracts for the supply of goods, collects orders.
The merchandiser, on the other hand, works directly with the goods, already at the point of sale.
Merchandiser responsibilities include:
window dressing;
Display of goods on shelves;
In this regard, the most important knowledge and skills for a merchandiser are:
Ability to organize retail space, knowledge of the principles of zoning retail space;
Basic knowledge in product promotion and marketing;
Impeccable knowledge of the features of a particular group of goods;
Ability to respond quickly to changing demand and market conditions.
Merchandiser resume
Of course, the first item in the resume of the merchandiser will be personal and contact details - not a single document of the applicant can do without this.
The ideal education for a merchandiser is a diploma in merchandising or sales manager. Experience as a salesperson, sales assistant, or sales representative preferred.
However, often a person without experience can get the position of a merchandiser. In this case, it is important to mention the desire to learn, develop in trading and gain new experience in the resume.
In the professional skills section, you should indicate (if you have the appropriate skill):
Possession of skills in working with a PC and a cash register (KKM); experience in product promotion;
Control over the balance of goods in the warehouse and timely replenishment of stocks;
Control over the level of sales and prompt change of tactics in the event of a fall or increase in consumer demand;
Knowledge of foreign language.
As for personal qualities, sociability and stress resistance are important for a merchandiser. It is these qualities that should be emphasized in the appropriate section of your resume.
After entering your full name, date of birth and other personal information in the appropriate fields, fill out the Work Experience section. In the appropriate fields, indicate the position, information about the employing company, briefly list the main responsibilities and achievements.
It is better to describe the duties of a merchandiser in a resume as specifically as possible, using numbers.
For example:
- visited 3 retail outlets per day according to the route list;
- laid out goods (pasta, cereals, spices, cheeses) according to the company's standards - more than 200 items at each point;
- checked the expiration dates of the goods, the availability and relevance of price tags;
- controlled the volume of commodity stocks - more than 200 units daily;
- tracked the progress of promotions;
- controlled the availability and relevance of promotional materials (2 racks in each outlet);
- daily handed over photo reports to the supervisor.
Use the opportunity to highlight your professionalism and interest in the profession by completing the Key Skills section. Name in the resume those skills that form the basis of the merchandiser's activity. For example:
- 2 years experience in a food retail chain;
- knowledge of the principles of merchandising, the basics and specifics of the display of food and non-food products;
- economic analysis skills;
- knowledge of merchandising programs: "Spaceman" or "Space Planning", "AutoCAD";
- Good communication skills, ability to work effectively both independently and in a team.
Describe your accomplishments using as specific language as possible, preferably with numbers. “According to the results of marketing research, the stands I designed in the Mega Mall shopping center were recognized as the most visited stands of the company in the city (more than 300 people a day)”; "Became a finalist of the company's internal competition for the best booth."
All other information relevant to the desired position should be entered in the "Additional Information" field. If personal qualities help you in your work, give an example: “Result orientation and high efficiency allow me to work effectively even at the end of a busy day.” What other personality traits of a merchandiser are important to employers? These are punctuality, accuracy, attentiveness, activity, creativity, purposefulness, decency, independence, diligence. If you have any of these qualities, it makes sense to include them in your resume.
The main meaning of the French word "résumé" is "a summary of the essence." All information must be reliable: no cheating! At the same time, a good resume is not overloaded with details, it does not take much time to read it.
If you have photos of the showcases or shelves you have designed on the trading floor, we recommend that you choose the most revealing of them, create a portfolio and add it to your resume.

Expert opinion
Emma plans to build her career in the trading field. It can be seen that the girl approached this choice consciously. She received a specialized education - a diploma in merchandising. She was not afraid of starting positions: she worked as a seller and sales agent. Moreover, she worked in these positions for a long time - 2 years each. This fact immediately attracts the attention of the employer - it is clear that the candidate is a serious person, he understands "what's what" in trade. Emma's resume is clearly structured.
Emma is applying for two positions at once - a merchandiser and a sales representative. From a telephone conversation with the girl, it became clear that she had a poor idea of the difference between these specialties. This is understandable: professions for Russian business are relatively new. However, it must be remembered that a merchandiser and a sales representative are two completely different specialties.
We distinguish between professions
A merchandiser is an employee who is responsible for the availability of goods on the counter, placing them on the shelves and shop windows. It essentially implements the "rule of five 'n'" (the right product in the right place, at the right time, in the right quantity and at the right price).
A sales representative is an intermediary between the supplier and the seller of the goods. He enters into supply contracts on behalf of the company, and even has the right to sign. It is highly desirable for a sales representative to have a driving skill (ideally, a personal car), since it is not easy to go around all the “points” by public transport, given the Moscow traffic jams.
Making a choice
To help Emma decide on a profession, you need to find out what professional skills she has. The girl admitted that she put “negotiating and concluding agreements” in the “Professional skills” column simply “because it might come in handy.” In fact, she never had to deal with these responsibilities.
It turned out that at previous places of work, Emma was engaged in window dressing, developing promotional campaigns. Moreover, the girl studied professional literature on the organization of a retail space, although she did not indicate this in her resume. Therefore, considering all of the above, we suggested that Emma focus on the position of merchandiser.
Making amendments
So, in order for the employer to quickly understand that he has an experienced and interested merchandiser in front of him, we will amend the resume:
