However, this holiday has a history.
The decision to celebrate the City Day of Moscow for the first time was made in the middle of the 19th century. Then the question was raised to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the city, and it was supported by quite influential people - the Governor-General of Moscow A. Shcherbatov, the Metropolitan of Moscow Filaret and the writer K. Aksakov.
To establish the holiday date, the historian I. Zabelin took up the calculation of the exact date when Moscow was mentioned in the Ipatiev Chronicle, and found that this happened on April 4, 1147. At the same time, disputes arose about this, since N. Karamzin noted that the capital was first mentioned in March 1147. Later, scientists reached an agreement, and it was decided to celebrate the anniversary of Moscow in the spring of 1847.
The planning of the celebration involved three whole days of celebrations. The first day was supposed to be a "church celebration", the second - a "scientific celebration" at Moscow University, and on the same day it was planned to hold a ball at the Governor-General of Moscow. Well, the third day was supposed to be a "national celebration", in which the inhabitants of the city could receive gifts in the city square.
Unfortunately, the plans did not materialize. On December 31, 1846, in the evening, Emperor Nicholas I ordered the celebrations to take place on January 1, 1847. Of course, the celebrations took place, but not at all in the form that was planned. Metropolitan Philaret said a prayer for the glory of Moscow in the Miracle Monastery, and prayers were also read in other churches. For the people - in the center of the city, a festive installation of tallow bowls was installed, which quickly went out due to strong winds.
The 800th anniversary of Moscow was celebrated more extensively and more memorable. In 1947, I. Stalin ordered to celebrate the day of Moscow in early September. For this anniversary, the medal "In Commemoration of the 800th Anniversary of Moscow" was minted. The holiday was celebrated on September 7th. The city was decorated with flags and photographs of the leaders, lights lit up in the evening and fireworks were fired.
Later, in 1986, the head of the city committee of the CPSU at that time, B. Yeltsin, issued a decree to annually celebrate Moscow Day in early September. These days food fairs were held in the city.
The most grandiose in the history of this holiday was the 850th anniversary of Moscow in 1997 under Yu. Luzhkov. The beginning of the holiday was marked by a concert of world opera stars on Cathedral Square in the Kremlin. Then there was the opening ceremony of the holiday on Tverskaya Square.
