Excerpt characterizing the Outrigger
“The teacher comes when the student is READY to learn, dear,” the elder said quietly, smiling. “And you haven’t even figured it out within yourself yet.” Even in things that have been open to you for a long time.
In order not to show how much his words upset me, I tried to immediately change the topic and asked the witch girl a sensitive question that was persistently spinning in my brain.
- Forgive me for my indiscretion, Anna, but how could you forget such terrible pain? And is it even possible to forget this?..
– I haven’t forgotten, my dear. I simply understood and accepted it... Otherwise it would have been impossible to continue to exist,” the girl answered sadly shaking her head.
I was seething with indignation, unable to stop my racing thoughts!.. And no matter how hard I tried, I could not calm down.
Sincerely feeling sorry for the witch girl, at the same time I wildly wanted to know everything about her, which meant asking her a lot of questions about what could cause her pain. It was reminiscent of a crocodile, which, devouring its unfortunate victim, shed burning tears over it... But no matter how ashamed I was, I could not help myself... This was the first time in my short life when I almost I didn’t pay attention to the fact that I could hurt a person with my questions... I was very ashamed of this, but I also understood that for some reason it was very important for me to talk to her about all this, and I continued to ask, “closing on “all eyes”... But, to my great happiness and surprise, the witch girl, without being offended at all, calmly continued to answer my naive childish questions, without expressing the slightest displeasure.
– I understood the reason for what happened. And another thing is that this was also apparently my test... Having passed it, this amazing world in which my grandfather and I now live together was revealed to me. Yes and much more...
– Was it really necessary to endure this just to get here?! – Stella was horrified.

The optimal use of auto-hydraulic lifts is to perform urgent, critical work at various height levels, and on objects that can be located at a considerable distance from one another. The demand for this type of special equipment is growing day by day, and the market is developing towards the creation of models that ensure operation at high altitudes, while maintaining minimal weights and dimensions of installations. But the high altitude, combined with lightweight structures, increases the risk of industrial accidents. This means that the role of stabilizing devices, and above all outriggers, is increasing.

Original outrigger design

The plastic support can simply be slipped on and locked onto the outrigger rod

Risk is a noble cause

Finished gaskets are sent to customers

Powerful Bronto SkyLift outriggers lift wheels off the ground

The operator selects the required support area and its thickness taking into account his experience and the characteristics of the gaskets

The customer can even agree on the color of synthetic gaskets

The H-shaped outrigger arrangement in Bronto SkyLift installations ensures safe work

In small AGPs, outrigger hydraulic cylinders are attached to the chassis frame

Plastic pads can always be at hand

Even heavy loads will not destroy the asphalt thanks to plastic linings

DICA plastic linings (USA) are very elegant

The surface of the pillow in contact with the supporting surface is made non-smooth

High-quality work of retractable supports is a vital necessity

Compared to other types of special equipment, auto-hydraulic lifts (hereinafter referred to as AHLs) are perhaps associated with the largest number of cases of injuries caused by loss of stability of the lifting installation itself. Despite the fact that designers are trying in every possible way to improve the safety of work, and regulatory authorities are establishing increasingly stringent requirements designed to prevent accidents, the fact remains: statistics indicate an increase in cases of overturning of AGP as a result of soil subsidence. Although some experts attribute this simply to the increased opportunities for information thanks to the Internet.

First of all, the stable state of the AGP is ensured by specially designed outriggers. Interestingly, about 65% of all AGP accidents are caused by improper use of outriggers. The maximum ground pressure according to modern European standards should not exceed 4 MPa. This standard ensures trouble-free operation, and it is quite realistic if the existing support devices are used correctly.

Outriggers can be folding, rotating, or remote. The most common use is remote. More often they use 4 supports, but there are lifts in which only two front outriggers are installed.

In its most general form, an external outrigger is a power telescopic stand with a support-mounting paw, hinged or rigidly attached to the end of a beam extended in the transverse direction. There are options for outriggers rotating in the horizontal plane. This design facilitates access to the elements of the chassis of the base vehicle, however, the cost of such a design technique is quite high, so outriggers rotating 180° are not often found in our country.

To ensure the necessary stability and counteract tipping during operation of the lift, the installation legs are pressed against the ground, and when finished, they are moved away from it. The movement of the supports with mounting feet is provided mainly by double-acting hydraulic cylinders, which raise and lower the support feet. The supports can be of different lengths: short, from 0.7 m, medium or long, up to 1.5 m or more. The length is determined by the height of the chassis, because the extended legs must lift the base vehicle until the wheels come off, i.e., so that the suspension and chassis wheels are fully suspended. The hydraulic cylinders used are standardized, mass-produced. Their range is very wide, and you can choose almost any size you need. In Europe alone, more than 120 enterprises produce hydraulic cylinders for special machinery and equipment.

The main task of outriggers is to increase the support contour of the lifting unit and unload the chassis of the base machine. The contour built by outriggers can be H- or X-shaped. On tight construction sites, outriggers are usually arranged in an X-shape, which allows them to be extended as far as possible despite limited space. But today it is increasingly possible to see an increase in the support contour of the AGP by using a combined X-H-shaped scheme instead of an X-shaped support arrangement. In this case, X-pattern supports are installed in front, and rectangular, telescopic H-shaped supports are installed in the rear. Due to this scheme, the support area increases, the machine feels more stable, while the occupied area increases slightly. In AGPs operating at high altitudes, as a rule, H-shaped outrigger installation schemes are used, since in this case the maximum area of the support contour is ensured.

Standard type outrigger supports are round in shape. Rectangular supports are also used; they are used in reinforced outriggers. The beams, to the outer sides of which cylinders that lower and raise the support legs are bolted through mounting flanges, are pulled out from the base of the AGP on supporting rollers and held in their final positions by a locking device. These beams can consist of several telescopic sections. To prevent their spontaneous extension, the latches have an additional lock. The extension length of the beams is adjustable; usually the design specifies 2–3 options for the extension length. The beams can be extended manually, with fixation either arbitrarily or in certain positions, or hydraulically, with fixation in any position.

One of the most stable is considered to be AGP, created by Ruthmann Gmbh & Co KG from Germany. The company claims that the design of their mods. The Steiger TTS 1000, designed to work at heights of up to 100 m, allows specialists to perform their functions at maximum height in a basket with a load capacity (g/c) of 320 kg at wind speeds of up to 16 m/s. Today this is a world record for sustainability.

But the Ruthmann Steiger TTS 1000 model, which is essentially an 80-ton 6-axle lift semi-trailer, was produced in a single number. But if we talk about serial models, then the undisputed leader in stability is the world leader in high-altitude AGPs - the Finnish company Bronto Skylift. Its installations operate at heights significantly exceeding the 100-meter mark. Maud. The S112HLA is designed to lift the working platform by 112 m. Thanks to the carefully calculated H-shaped design and the power of the outriggers, people working at height feel quite confident at wind speeds of up to 12 m/s. Moreover, a platform with a lifting capacity of 700 kg can accommodate an entire repair team with tools. The control button activates the outriggers and the horizontal leveling system, and in about 40 seconds the supports are installed in the desired position.

The car lift control has a separate system that controls the uniform load on the outriggers at any position of the working platform, taking into account the influence of external factors. Secure settings are automatically supported. The “load moment limiter” program installed on the on-board computer is responsible for ensuring that, under normal conditions, any operator actions, including not entirely competent ones, do not lead to the machine tipping over, unless, of course, something happens that the electronic controller has foreseen cannot, for example, sudden subsidence of the soil.

In addition, there is a system that monitors the fixation of the retractable beams and the position of the outriggers, controls the horizontal position of the working platform, as well as the maximum deviations from the horizon of the entire installation as a whole. If the outriggers are installed with any violations or the pressure of the supports on the ground changes unacceptably, an audible signal will immediately warn the operator. At the same time, the movements of the boom are blocked, and work can only be continued after the risk factors have been eliminated. The control panel is at the operator's disposal on the ground, but there is a duplicate instrument panel on the working platform.

At the Bauma 2013 exhibition, the Finnish manufacturer presented two AGP models of the new XR series. The new products incorporate all the latest advanced world developments in the field of lifting equipment. The XR series was developed by Bronto specialists with the aim of replacing the XDT series, which has been successfully operating on the market for many years, but is becoming obsolete. Among the many differences, the most striking is the increased horizontal reach in the models of the new series. In particular, mod. The S 56 XR, when raising the boom to a height of 40 m, provides a horizontal reach of 35 m. And the maximum horizontal reach of this model is 40 m.

Of course, with the new characteristics, the design of the outriggers has also changed. Outriggers of the Bronto XR series are equipped with a self-leveling function. This allows Bronto Skylift units to operate confidently on slopes of up to 10°! And this despite the fact that at a reach of 40 m, the lift boom holds a working platform designed for a lifting capacity of 700 kg. The ability to work on inclined planes of AGPs of such mass and with such a boom reach is a very important positive factor in the characteristics of new lifts.

Other manufacturers use different approaches when working on inclined sites. In some cases, in order to compensate for the slope, wedge-shaped pads are used under outriggers. During the construction of the Chill Factor ski complex in the UK, it became necessary to operate a car lift installed on a concrete plane with a slope of 21°. Rubberized non-slip pads were used to stabilize the machines, and the machines themselves were secured to the top of the slope with steel braces.

Italian company P.C. Produzioni s.r.l., operating under the Manotti brand, is well known on the international market as an experienced manufacturer of special equipment. Avtomash Holding LLC has been successfully cooperating with this company for 2 years: it purchases various models of auto-hydraulic lifts and installs them on Russian and foreign-made automobile chassis. Manotti produces a wide range of outriggers and pays great attention to their quality. These are fixed supports (for CMU from 6 to 36 t), manual supports (for CMU from 3 to 40 t), hydraulic supports (for CMU from 14 to 200 t).

Distinctive features of the Manotti AGP include the use of Bosch Rexroth hydraulic control systems and an IMO (Germany) slewing support platform. Both companies are world leaders in the production of hydraulics. The hydraulic pumps and hydraulic valves supplied with Manotti products are reliable and highly efficient. AGP metal structures are made from world-famous Swedish steel, which also determines their structural reliability and weight reduction compared to similar models from other manufacturers.

The maximum load capacity of the basket is 250 kg, which allows two operators to be in the basket at the same time, and they can independently control the operation of the AGP. Automotive hydraulic lifts are equipped with a basket load limiter, an automatic sound signal when overloaded, a hand pump for emergency lowering of the basket, and safety valves are provided on the hydraulic cylinders. The safety devices used are manufactured by the Italian company BPE Electronics.

At the STT-2013 exhibition, Avtomash Holding LLC will demonstrate a 28-meter GDX28 auto-hydraulic lift mounted on a Ural-43206-4151-79 chassis. The obvious advantages of the GDX28 include a maximum lifting height of 28 m, a maximum working boom reach of 15.5 m, and a maximum load on the cradle of 225 kg.

AGP GDX28, having all the advantages of Manotti products, in combination with the Ural chassis, represents a high-quality example of special-purpose vehicles - reliable, highly cross-country, with good GVH indicators.

Lining is an important element

In almost all cases of emergency falls of the AGP, the commissions involved in the investigation of the incident established that the accident could have been completely avoided by taking simple precautions - extending the outriggers to the required distance and installing special pads, which are also called support cushions. An analysis of more than 90% of accidents with a fall in the APG showed that in most cases outriggers were not used at all, not to mention pads under them! But, according to experts, installing chocks under the feet of outriggers is as important for maintaining a stable state of the installation during operation as the reliability of the outriggers themselves. The pads provide support points even on very uneven and unstable surfaces. And besides, and this is especially important when performing work in urban conditions, even with a significant mass of the AGP itself, properly selected pads will preserve the integrity of the pavement, will not destroy the asphalt and will even save lawns.

A responsible operator of even a small AGP, not to mention installations operating at significant heights, must, at the slightest suspicion of ground instability, apply a working load to each of the supports, without lifting the load high, and thereby check the reliability of the supporting surface. The use of pads of maximum size, which reduce pressure on the ground, will also help to avoid an accident.

At first glance, it seems that there is nothing fancy about the linings. However, you should know that to perform work at height, support pads must have a number of properties. Wood is widely used as a material for linings, but it must be taken into account that the linings should not be afraid of dampness, i.e., have water-repellent properties. Therefore, it is undesirable to use simple wood; hard wood is required. This is necessary not only so that the wooden lining does not rot or crumble under the influence of moisture, and the metal lining does not corrode, but also so that the wooden lining remains light after working in the rain or snow. The dimensions of the wooden lining must be at least 500x500x50 mm, so when dry it has a solid weight.

In addition, in ordinary wood, stress will quickly cause cracks to appear, into which water will enter. In winter, freezing and thawing, this water will quickly render the lining unusable. To increase the resource, the wood should be impregnated with water-repellent mixtures, and the linings should be sheathed with steel tape. The American company Sterling Lumber has developed and successfully markets wooden composite linings. Developed by Sterling Lumber, a C-rolled steel frame is sandwiched between wooden support planes.

Good quality linings must be resistant to chemical influences, because the installations have to work in the most unexpected conditions. Also, professional pads are made of dielectric and heat-resistant material that does not change its properties in the temperature range from –100 to +80 °C.

Today, in addition to steel and wood, polyethylene and nylon are used as materials for linings. Nylon and even better quality polyethylene linings are designed for “lifetime” operation, i.e. their resource is sufficient for the entire period of operation of the car lift. And although the price of synthetic pillows is high, their reliability justifies the price. Synthetic pillows are resistant to deformation and shock loads and are much lighter than steel ones. At the request of the buyer, the manufacturer can apply a relief pattern and even the customer’s logo on the plastic linings on the ground adhesion side - it is not difficult to cast and process a synthetic lining. The high elasticity of the material allows the lining to be held reliably and firmly even on small areas. On the support side, the surface of the linings is made very smooth. This is necessary so that the support legs slide and easily hit the desired point on the surface of the lining. Nylon or polyethylene lining is not harmed by contact with oil, fuel, and they are not afraid of corrosion.

There are very few enterprises specializing in the production of high-quality synthetic pads, since the use of “factory” support pads is not common in our country, and many operators somehow frivolously do not think about possible ground subsidence at all.

The most well-known products in our country are the French company STABline, as well as the Belgian company CGK-Group. Since 2010, Moscow-based JSC ServiceKranTekhnika has been the exclusive dealer of CGK-Group in Russia. The range of sizes of square plastic pads produced by CGK-Group is quite wide: from a length of 300 mm and a plate thickness of 30 mm to 1200 mm with a thickness of 80 mm. Each such pillow is designed for a load of 4 to 90 tons, respectively. Round pads are also available, from ∅800 mm with a thickness of 60 mm to ∅1200 mm with a thickness of 80 mm. Such linings are guaranteed to withstand loads from 30 to 80 tons.

Among the domestic manufacturers of synthetic linings, one can name the Rostov enterprise Elmika. The company's specialists selected a polymer - modified TECAST PA6G - and today produce support feet, both standard and in sizes specified by the customer. This paw fits directly onto the outrigger support. The range of product sizes ranges from ∅400 mm with a thickness of 86 mm, designed for a load of up to 25 tons, to supports ∅1000 mm with a thickness of 200 mm. Such “shoes”, installed on a support, can withstand a load of 240 tons each.

* * *

Despite the fact that modern AGPs are equipped with the latest electronic systems that analyze loads and help to correctly install outriggers, practice, unfortunately, shows the following. If the operator does not follow the rules for installing outriggers and does not use reliable supports in his work, then it is quite possible that a strong gust of wind will simply overturn a machine that is not properly secured, or if the supports are not extended enough, the resulting overload will knock down the AGP. Therefore, I would like to wish: operators, be vigilant!

Are you familiar with the word outrigger? Few people know what it is. This is a word of foreign origin, unusual to the ears of Russian people. A special term that is familiar, for the most part, to people of specific professions and occupations: athletes involved in rowing sports, builders and those who are in one way or another related to construction and loading equipment.

Outrigger on land

Each of us has seen construction cranes, forklifts and other heavy equipment. When a device lifts a heavy load, often heavier than the machine itself, there is a chance that it will tip over. To prevent this from happening, the design of the equipment includes special supports that extend during work and provide greater stability.

This effect is achieved by increasing the area of the equipment base - a tower, crane or tower. This rule is studied in physics lessons back in school: in order to become taller, it is necessary to increase the area of its support and lower the center of gravity. It is this function that is performed by heavy parts - outriggers.

Outrigger in water

Outrigger - what is it in maritime affairs? By analogy with the land device, this is a structure that gives stability to the boat on the water. Originally used by Austronesian peoples. To prevent their narrow long canoes from capsizing by the wind and waves, a floating structure was attached to the side, expanding the area of the boat. It can be added to one or both sides.

In modern times, the same principle is used on long narrow boats called gigs. Since these boats are very light for quick gliding, the oarlocks in which the oars are attached are made external. This makes the rowers' work easier and increases the stability of the vessel. You already guessed that this is an outrigger that performs the same functions as on land. The boats themselves are also called outriggers, just like these oarlocks.

Outrigger on a journey

Fans of travel to Asia, Australia and Oceania may have heard this word in relation to hotels in this region. Many people know that Outrigger is a hotel chain that has existed for more than seventy years. It got its name after 1963, when one of the company's founders, Roy Kelly, bought the old Outrigger Canoe Club and built a beachfront hotel in its place.

This chain now contains nearly 40 hotels and condominiums. In Hawaii, there are several Waikiki hotels, such as the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort or OHANA Waikiki Malia by Outrigger, and condominiums: Royal Sea Cliff Kona by Outrigger on the main island, Royal Kahana Maui by Outrigger on Maui and others. There are hotels on the Pacific islands - Fiji and Guam, Mauritius and the Maldives.

In Vietnam, "Outrigger" is represented by the Outrigger Vinh Hoi Resort and Spa hotel, in Thailand there are two "Outrigger" hotels - in Phuket and Samui - these are Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort and Outrigger Koh Samui Beach Resort.

It seems that the Outrigger company has absorbed the stability properties of its name and is firmly on its feet. After all, it is known: whatever you name the boat, that’s how it will float. All of these hotels are of high quality and are worth a stay.

“Go into the yard, otherwise it’s obvious he’ll come out now,” she said.
Dolokhov remained at the gate. Anatole followed the maid into the yard, turned the corner and ran onto the porch.
Gavrilo, Marya Dmitrievna’s huge traveling footman, met Anatoly.
“Please see the lady,” the footman said in a deep voice, blocking the way from the door.
- Which lady? Who are you? – Anatole asked in a breathless whisper.
- Please, I've been ordered to bring him.
- Kuragin! back,” Dolokhov shouted. - Treason! Back!
Dolokhov, at the gate where he stopped, was struggling with the janitor, who was trying to lock the gate behind Anatoly as he entered. Dolokhov, with his last effort, pushed the janitor away and, grabbing the hand of Anatoly as he ran out, pulled him out the gate and ran with him back to the troika.

Marya Dmitrievna, finding a tearful Sonya in the corridor, forced her to confess everything. Having intercepted Natasha’s note and read it, Marya Dmitrievna, with the note in her hand, went up to Natasha.
“Bastard, shameless,” she told her. - I don’t want to hear anything! - Pushing away Natasha, who was looking at her with surprised but dry eyes, she locked it and ordered the janitor to let through the gate those people who would come that evening, but not to let them out, and ordered the footman to bring these people to her, sat down in the living room, waiting kidnappers.
When Gavrilo came to report to Marya Dmitrievna that the people who had come had run away, she stood up with a frown and folded her hands back, walked around the rooms for a long time, thinking about what she should do. At 12 o'clock at night, feeling the key in her pocket, she went to Natasha's room. Sonya sat in the corridor, sobbing.
- Marya Dmitrievna, let me see her for God’s sake! - she said. Marya Dmitrievna, without answering her, unlocked the door and entered. “Disgusting, nasty... In my house... Vile little girl... I just feel sorry for my father!” thought Marya Dmitrievna, trying to quench her anger. “No matter how difficult it is, I’ll tell everyone to be silent and hide it from the count.” Marya Dmitrievna entered the room with decisive steps. Natasha lay on the sofa, covering her head with her hands, and did not move. She lay in the same position in which Marya Dmitrievna had left her.
- Good, very good! - said Marya Dmitrievna. - In my house, lovers can make dates! There's no point in pretending. You listen when I talk to you. - Marya Dmitrievna touched her hand. - You listen when I talk. You have disgraced yourself like a very lowly girl. I would do that to you, but I feel sorry for your father. I'll hide it. – Natasha did not change her position, but only her whole body began to jump up from silent, convulsive sobs that choked her. Marya Dmitrievna looked back at Sonya and sat down on the sofa next to Natasha.
